Organizing in the Holidays
Shopping, Gifting and Organizing in the Holidays
December 11, 2025
This time of year our homes start to collect clutter. We’re shopping for food in bulk in preparation for large meals and dinner parties. We’re bringing out more decorations, filling our homes and hearts with warm cheer. We’re shopping and hiding gifts to surprise our loved ones. Joyful clutter, but clutter nonetheless.
In the midst of the chaos it is hard to think about staying on top of your organizing routine. But, here are a few hacks to stay on top of it all:
1. Use “Seasonal Swap-Out” Bins
As each holiday passes, immediately pack décor into clearly labeled bins and rotate them with the next holiday’s bin. This keeps surfaces clear and prevents multiple holidays from bleeding into each other.
2. Apply a “One In, One Out” Rule for New Items
With gifts, winter clothes and décor coming in, choose one item to donate or toss for each new item that enters the home. This keeps accumulation in check when clutter tends to spike.
3. Establish a Daily 10-Minute Reset
During busy months, aim for short, focused resets in the evening: clear counters, return items to their homes, and empty high-traffic drop zones. Small resets prevent big messes from building.
4. Designate a Temporary Holiday Staging Area
Pick one spot for packages, returns, outgoing gifts, and donation bags. Containing transitional items in one place keeps the rest of the home tidy. Seek out areas like a corner of the garage or a shelf in a closet.
